Biting into the core . . .

Picture
There's an old adage that goes like this, "How do you eat an elephant?  One bite at a time."  The same can be said of Common Core Math.

The Common Core Standards for Mathematics offer an unprecedented opportunity to reshape American mathematics education. But, it can a be a bit overwhelming to completely redesign our pedagogy and content simultaneously.  For that reason, the best approach it to take it "one bite at a time" or in this case, "one byte at a time."  This site is designed to help you do just that.  The resources are organized in several main categories:

  • Sample the Core -- 10 steps to building your first Common Core Math lesson
  • Explore the Core -- Information about the Common Core Math Standards and how they were developed
  • Experience the Core -- Resources to help you bring the core to life in your classroom.    There are also resources for families and kids.

The authors of the Common Core have provided  these key shifts to keep in mind as you consider Common Core Math:

  1. Focus strongly where the Standards focus
  2. Coherence: Think across grades, and link to major topics within grades
  3. Rigor: In major topics pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application with equal intensity

Any time you want to reference the standards, you can hover your mouse on the right side of any page on this site and click on the app from MasteryConnect which will open to allow you to search the standards.  You can also download this app for your phone or other device.

It is my hope that this site will help you as you "bite into the core."
