Coaching Resources

Picture
Coaches who can outline plays on a black board are a dime a dozen.
The ones who win get inside their player and motivate.
                                                                                              -- Vince Lombardi

The secret is to work less as individuals and more as a team. As a coach, I play not my eleven best, but my best eleven.
                                                                                                     -- Knute Rockney

One of the gifts of the Common Core is that states and organizations all over the nation are working simultaneously to help teacher improve their knowledge of mathematics along with their pedagogy. Here are a few of the resources available:

Curriculum Evaluation Tools:
  • The K-8 Publisher's Criteria for the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics here.

Family Night materials:
  •  Engage NY has put together the materials for family night.

Professional development materials:
  • SEDL has produced videos demonstrating math concepts (searchable by grade level.)
  • Annenberg has outstanding video resources for teachers.
  • NCSM has coaching resources for both mathematical content and pedagological knowledge as well as webinars on Common Core Math implementation.
  • A variety of resources for coaches can be found at The Elementary Mathematics Specialists & Teacher Leaders (ems&tl) Project
  • NCTM has online seminars available for math training.
  • NCSM has webinars on Common Core Math implementation.
  • Engage NY has common core training for PreK to 12  here.
  • Inside Mathematics offers excellent coaching resources.
  • New York City Schools also has incredible professional development units prepared with handouts and activity guides.
  • Georgia has great training units and PowerPoint presentations.
  • Mathlanding has a collection of videos for instruction or training.
  • Free web resources from EdWeb.net.
  • MathSolutions has outstanding offerings for staff training.
  • The Teaching Channel videos with Bill McCallum which could serve as great conversation starters about math fluency vs. understanding. See also the document below from Utah on computation and the Common Core.
  • Great chart linking to resources from a variety of resources from North Dakota.
  • National Science Digital Library has a searchable index of resources for common core by strand.
  • Great math background from ThinkMath.
  • Education Northwest has modules to explore a variety of aspects of the core.

Professional Learning Communities:
  • PLC resources are provided by Colorado as PLC Bytes.

Standards for Mathematical Practice:

  • Utah has several templates for discussions about the SMP in professional learning communities.
  • Institute for Advanced Study/Park City Mathematics has developed a rubric for the implementation of the SMPs.

Unit Planning:
  • Goshen, North Dakota has a template for planning units. Another template is available here.
  • North Carolina has additional units which are designed as the key focus activities for each grade level.

Misc. Resources for Trainings:
